Lonnie Donegan
(29/4/1931 - 3/11/2002) was born Anthony James Donegan in Glasgow, he moved
to London at an early age after his parents divorced.
Inspired by
blues music and New Orleans Jazz he heard on the radio he bought his first
guitar at the age of 14. He was the
first person in Britain to become famous for playing skiffle. In 1955
he recorded 'Rock Island Line' with Chris Barber's Jazz Band. It was a
huge hit in 1956. It was the first debut record in Britain to go gold
and reached the top ten in the States. He had three UK number ones and
numerous top ten hits in the '50s and '60s, including, 'Does Your Chewing
Gum Lose It's Flavour?', 'Cumberland Gap' and 'My Old Man's A
Dustman'. Midway through a UK tour Lonnie unfortunately died in 2002
aged 71.
