I'm
Free
Frederick John
Inman, born in Preston (28/6/1935 - 8/3/2007), made his TV debut in the
sitcom Two In Clover in 1970.
But in 1972 he joined the cast of
the BBC sit-com Are You Being Served? Set in the men's and
women's department of a large fictional store called Grace Brothers.
Following the British class system characters rarely addressed each other by
their given names. As Mr Humphreys he achieved worldwide fame with the
catchphrase "I'm Free" and his walk across the floor.
The
show became popular around the world and can still be seen in the USA and
many Commonwealth countries. It ran on BBC1 for thirteen years up
until 1985.
John
Inman was also
a highly successful Pantomime Dame appearing in more than 40 productions
over the years.
