During the 1970's and 80's Dave Allen (6/7/1936 - 10/3/2005), born David Tynan O'Mahoney in Tallaght, Ireland, had highly successful comedy shows on both the BBC and ITV.  His trademark was a drink of whisky in one hand, cigarette in the other and telling jokes in an intimate way whilst sitting on a stool.  

He told stories about the foibles of life and in a non-pc way poked fun at life in general and in particular the Catholic Church and the Church of England.   His shows were a combination of stand-up, albeit whilst sitting down, and sketches.  

He died suddenly but peacefully in his sleep.
