Hello
My Darlings
Charles
Edward Springall, Londoner, was born on 19th of June 1925. He took his
mother's maiden name, Drake and became Charlie Drake on stage, TV and film.
He
made his TV debut in 1953 in 'The Centre Show'. With his babyface
looks, small stature, curly red hair and his use of slapstick he became a
firm favourite with children as a comedian.
In 1957 he
starred in 'Laughter in Store' a move that widened his appeal. In 1961
during a live broadcast of 'The Charlie Drake Show' he was seriously injured
in a stunt that went wrong. He opened the show with his now famous
catchphrase "Hello My Darlings".
His biggest
success came with 'The Worker' which ran from 1965 to 1970. Playing a
labourer who was perpetually unemployed, but was sent to a new job in every
episode by the ever-frustrated Mr Pugh at the local labour exchange.
The series was a mix of classic slapstick and traditional sitcom.
